OUR STORY
Our family has been gardening for generations. Firstly, I'm sure to feed a hungry family then into an active and loving hobby, which by the way, fed a hungry family. At a young age, my father learned to tend a large backyard garden by following his grandparents as they tended to their garden full of vegetables, fruits and ornamental plants. Alex and Hermina were Hungarian immigrants who tended their gardens with natural methods like composting, crop rotations, naturally preserving fruits and vegetables, planting seeds from saved seeds, and conservative irrigation out of necessity and tradition. They ate what they grew reminding them of the agricultural riches of the farms they left. Their gardens fed their family and neighbors in the Great Depression, became social gatherings in the neighborhood for each crop harvested from their small suburban plot. With common home garden items like tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots to uncommon garden items like like figs, kohlrabi asparagus, and gooseberries their garden fed and amazed family friends and neighbors.
This passion for natural gardening remains in the bloodline. My father always included me in his gardening and explained techniques he learned from his grandparents. I started planting pots of whatever leftover seeds I could find, learning as much as I could about each plant. In my early teens I offered gardening tips to neighbors and before I knew it I was learning so much more. I went on to take formal classes focusing on sustainable agriculture which included courses on soil and analysis. That's when I started blending natural amendments to get the most out of the soil without any long-term effects on the environment or resources.
It’s all about Ruby...Ruby is our very special pit-mix rescue. She loves lazy days in the sun and helping control the critters around the garden. Ruby loves life and her family. She represents all the naturally good things in life. Ruby, like gardening, returns the love I give to her many more times over.
